Our history is the history of reality, not the history of faits accomplis.
Whoever contemplates the history of Lebanon and its politics will see that Lebanon’s history has always been a history of reality, whereas its politics have always been a politics of the fait accompli. Between reality and the fait accompli lies a vast difference, the same difference between essence and existence, between the permanent and the changeable.

Reality is a general event, while the fait accompli is a particular incident. Reality springs from the enduring people; the fait accompli, from transient individuals. Thus, the former is eternal, while the latter is temporal. If we say that the history of Lebanon is the history of the fixed essence of the Lebanese people, then we must also say that the politics of Lebanon are the politics of the changing existence of its individuals.

Lebanon’s current crisis reflects this difference between the history of reality and the politics of faits accomplis: between what must be and what can be, between the logic of events and the absurdity of incidents. This is the very meaning expressed by those who say the game has surpassed the players: the game is the people, while the players are individuals; the game is destiny, while the players are puppets; the game is eternal, while the players are temporary.

Lebanese politicians are ignorant of Lebanon’s history—this history so ancient, so noble in its principles, so sublime in its aims. They do not read it. And if they do, they stop at the surface of its incidents in time, without probing the hidden depth behind its eternal events. Their knowledge of Lebanon’s history is informational, not philosophical. Therefore, they do not transcend memory in their reading of it. This is the opposite of the true meaning of history as reality: a lesson to be taken and a moral to be learned.

History, as reality, is education and ethics. The conscious statesman does not read history merely as a fait accompli but as a school where he learns how, from the past, he must build the future. For history lies not so much in the past as in the future.

History tells us that after Christ’s ascension into heaven, His disciples faced their first violent persecution at the hands of the Jews. They fled to Lebanon, where they rested upon its land and under its blue sky, and from there they departed in two opposite directions: eastward and westward.

History also tells us that Christ is the first fedā’ī (self-sacrificing fighter) on earth, and that the mystery of redemption is one of the greatest mysteries upon which Christianity rests.

And when history tells us that the Palestinian cause is tied to the Zionist and Jewish question, and when the philosophy of history teaches us that there is no randomness in history, then we understand that the Palestinians’ choice of the name “Fedā’iyīn” was no coincidence. Knowing this, we realize that the presence of the fedā’iyīn in Lebanon is not a mere fait accompli, but a reality rooted in the very core of our history. Why, then, did this occur only between Lebanon and Palestine?

It has been said that in 1948 Bechara El-Khoury and Riad El-Solh accepted the presence of Palestinians in Lebanon as a fait accompli, believing it would last no more than a month before they returned to their homes. Had they known Lebanon’s history philosophically, not merely informationally, they would have understood that Lebanon’s bond with Palestine is one of reality, not of circumstance. Lebanon and Palestine are the two pages of a single book that recounts to the world the story of the Son of Mary.

What must we do to grasp the true nature of our history? To understand that our history is one of reality, not of faits accomplis? To reach that essential unity which has remained fateful despite changing circumstances from the dawn of our history until today?

Here lies the point of divergence in Lebanon between the Right and the Left. The Right possesses the successful reality but lacks thought, and it entrusted reality to an incapable advocate who failed, because he had no thought. The Left, on the other hand, lacks reality but possesses thought, and entrusted it to a capable advocate who also failed, because he had no reality. Thus, the weakness of the Right lies in its lack of sound thought, while the strength of the Left lies in its possession of thought—but its lack of reality has doomed it to failure until now. If the Right were able to crown Lebanese politics with Lebanese philosophy, it would have overcome the Left and cast it aside. (Hence the Lebanese Forces succeeded and endured, while the forces of the Left fragmented despite the support of hostile external powers.)

The last page of Lebanon’s old political calendar has been turned, and a new calendar of Lebanese philosophy has begun. For the value of the rifle lies in the finger that pulls the trigger, the value of the finger in the hand to which it belongs, the value of the hand in the eye that guides it, and the value of the eye in the insight—that is, in the mind that knows.

Napoleon was once asked: “Whom do you fear?” He replied: “I fear a soldier in my army who does not know why he fights.”

Therefore, we in the Lebanese Forces have fought, and continue to struggle, for the truth of our history—the reality fixed in essence, as in philosophy—and we will never yield to faits accomplis, no matter how many trials and calamities may befall us.
