Philosophical Statement on the Cultural Concept of Arabism and the Role of Lebanese Philosophy

Philosophical Statement on the Cultural Concept of Arabism and the Role of Lebanese Philosophy

Inspired by the work “Philosophy That Cost Me My Blood”

Lebanese philosophy, as an independent intellectual approach, has historically chosen to address national and cultural issues from a conceptual and analytical standpoint, remaining distant from direct political engagement. The relationship between philosophy and national identity is one of complementarity: philosophy seeks understanding through principles and reflection, while politics operates through action and implementation.

For this reason, philosophers and thinkers have the right to contribute to national discussions, particularly those concerning identity and cultural belonging. A philosophical reading of events enables a more objective and reasoned understanding, free from political tension or temporary interests.

Philosophy affirms that truth arises from tangible reality rather than from aspiration or abstraction. Politics, as a social practice, must be grounded in factual reality, not in wishes or ideologies. Therefore, any political discourse that fails to originate from reality is necessarily flawed in both reasoning and outcome.

Lebanese philosophy maintains that any examination of national affairs must begin with Lebanon as an existing and sovereign reality, possessing its own historical, cultural, and social particularities. Ignoring this foundation leads to analytical error. The proper approach to national matters is thus one rooted in the study of Lebanon’s living reality within its historical and human context.

Within this framework, participation stands as a central issue in Lebanese public life. It is a matter of national importance that must be examined internally and objectively, rather than through external or abstract lenses.

Moreover, when addressing fundamental national questions, one must recognize Lebanon’s cultural and linguistic connection to the Arab world, understood as a civilizational and human dimension, free of religious or sectarian distinction. Arab identity, in this sense, represents a shared cultural space built collectively by diverse communities over centuries.

From a philosophical perspective, Arabism is therefore viewed as an open and inclusive cultural framework, not defined by religion or community, but by a common civilizational heritage shaped by both Christian and Muslim contributions, among others.

Philosophical analysis of history reveals that the interaction between these diverse components has shaped the modern Arab consciousness, with spiritual and cultural elements complementing one another in the formation of a unified identity.

In this light, the Presidency of the Lebanese Republic may be understood symbolically as a representation of national balance and cultural unity—an institutional expression of Lebanon’s plural identity and its mediating role between the Arab world and broader humanity.

Preserving this balance is a shared national duty. It does not concern individuals or communities alone but rather the principle of Lebanon’s existence as a state of diversity, openness, and dialogue—a bridge between the different currents of Arab and global civilization.

Lebanese philosophy, through such an approach, does not seek to define political or religious positions, but to establish a method of thought that prioritizes reality, history, and human dignity, promoting responsible participation in public life based on justice, citizenship, and shared cultural identity.
